Why Do Candles Tunnel and How Can You Stop It?

A beautiful jar candle can turn a cosy evening into something properly atmospheric - until it burns a narrow hole straight down the middle and leaves a thick ring of untouched wax at the sides. So, why do candles tunnel? Usually, it comes down to the first few burns, the wick, and the way heat travels through the wax. The good news is that tunnelling is often preventable, and a candle that has already started tunnelling can sometimes be rescued.
For fragrance lovers, this is more than a cosmetic problem. Tunnelling wastes wax, shortens the life of the candle and can make a favourite scent feel less generous than it should. A little candle care keeps your spooky seasonal scents, calming aromatherapy blends and gift-worthy jars burning as beautifully as they look.
Why Do Candles Tunnel?
Candles tunnel when the flame melts wax only in a small circle around the wick instead of creating an even pool across the surface. As the candle burns lower, that narrow channel becomes deeper, while a wall of unused wax builds around it.
The most common reason is extinguishing a candle too soon on its first burn. Wax has a memory of sorts: it tends to melt to roughly the same width it reached before. If the first melt pool only reaches halfway across the jar, later burns are likely to follow that smaller circle. This is especially noticeable in wide container candles with a single wick.
Not every tunnel is the result of user error, though. A wick that is too small for the candle’s diameter may not produce enough heat to melt the wax evenly. Very thick wax blends, cool rooms, draughts and poor-quality candle construction can also play a part. Sometimes the candle simply needs a different wick or a different vessel design, which is not something you can fix at home.
The First Burn Sets the Pattern
The first burn is the one worth planning. Ideally, let a new candle burn long enough for the wax to melt almost all the way to the edge of its container. This creates an even melt pool and gives the candle the best chance of continuing to burn evenly.
A useful rule is to allow around one hour of burning time for every 2.5 cm of candle diameter. A small candle may need only an hour or two, while a wider jar could need three or four. Treat this as a guide rather than a challenge. Always follow the maker’s instructions, and do not leave a candle burning unattended or for longer than the stated maximum burn time.
If you only have ten minutes before heading out, it is kinder to your candle to wait. Lighting it briefly again and again is a reliable way to encourage a narrow melt pool. Save it for a slow bath, a film night, a tarot reading or an evening when you can actually enjoy the glow.
Keep the wick trimmed, but not tiny
Before lighting, trim the wick to around 5 mm, unless the label says otherwise. A wick that has mushroomed - the little black, bulb-shaped build-up at the tip - can create soot, smoke and an over-large flame. Trimming it helps the candle burn more cleanly.
There is a balance, however. Cutting a wick extremely short can make the flame weak, especially in a candle that already has a deep wax well. The flame may struggle to reach the surrounding wax, causing more tunnelling rather than less. If a freshly trimmed wick will not stay lit, remove only the burnt black tip next time rather than cutting deeply into the wick.
Other Reasons a Candle May Burn Unevenly
A candle wants a still, level spot. Put it on a heat-resistant surface away from open windows, fans, radiators and busy doorways. A draught can push the flame to one side, making one part of the wax melt faster and causing the wick to bend or smoke.
Room temperature matters too. In a chilly home, the wax at the edge of the jar can stay firm while the centre melts downwards. This does not mean you need to heat the whole room for a candle, but an especially cold windowsill or conservatory is not an ideal burning spot.
Jar shape can affect performance. A very wide candle with one wick has more wax to heat than a narrower candle, and may tunnel more readily. Multi-wick candles are designed to cover a wider surface, but all wicks should be lit at the same time. Lighting only one creates uneven heat and can leave the other side of the candle untouched.
Natural waxes such as soy can also look a little less uniform than paraffin blends. Frosting, slight texture changes and a soft wax edge are normal features of many plant-wax candles. They are not automatically signs of tunnelling or poor quality. What matters is whether the wax pool is gradually reaching across the top and the candle is burning safely.
How to Fix a Tunnelling Candle
If your candle has already formed a wax crater, do not write it off just yet. The safest simple rescue is to give it a longer, supervised burn in a draught-free place. Let the flame work on the raised sides of wax for long enough to widen the melt pool. If the tunnel is shallow, this may be all it needs.
For more stubborn tunnels, the foil method can help. Wrap a loose collar of aluminium foil around the top of the jar, leaving an opening above the flame so it can breathe. The foil reflects heat towards the wax walls, helping them soften and melt. Keep the foil well clear of the flame and never seal the top of the candle.
Burn the candle this way only while you are watching it closely. Check it regularly, remove the foil once the surface has levelled out and allow the wax to cool completely before the next use. If the jar becomes excessively hot, the flame is unusually high or smoking heavily, extinguish it straight away and let everything cool.
Avoid digging wax out with a knife, pouring hot wax down the sink or trying to melt the surface with a hairdryer. These shortcuts can damage the container, splash hot wax or create a fire risk. A candle may feel like a small household pleasure, but an open flame deserves proper care.
When it is time to stop burning
Most candles should be retired when around 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom, or as directed on the label. Burning right down to the last trace can overheat the jar or its surface. Once cooled, leftover wax can still be enjoyed in a suitable wax warmer if the fragrance is strong and the wax is designed for that purpose. Otherwise, clean out the container carefully and reuse it for trinkets, crystals, tea lights or a tiny plant.
A Few Habits That Protect Your Candle
Good candle care is mostly about patience. Trim the wick before each burn, let the first melt pool spread, keep the candle away from draughts and give wide candles enough time to perform properly. Use a candle snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax to extinguish it if appropriate for the candle type, then straighten the wick before the wax sets. This can reduce smoke and leave it ready for next time.
It also helps to choose a candle that suits your routine. If you tend to light a scent for a quick half-hour while making tea, a smaller candle or wax melt may be a happier match than a large, wide jar. Big statement candles are lovely for long, unhurried evenings, but they do ask for more burn time.
A candle does not have to burn with laboratory-perfect precision to be worth enjoying. A little unevenness is normal, particularly with handmade or natural-wax candles. Give the flame time, keep it safe and still, and your favourite fragrance will have every chance to fill the room rather than disappearing down a lonely little tunnel.
